TEACHING TIPS

• Use various forms of measurement to demonstrate the length of the small intestines (13–16 feet) and large intestines (five feet). For example, you might have students cut lengths of string or line up books or other objects to show these lengths. Create a chart depicting the results.

 

• Show how the esophagus works. Squeeze a new tube of toothpaste over a plate to show how the esophagus squeezes its muscular walls to push food down into the stomach.
