Guided Reading Level N, Grade Level Equivalent 3. After separating from the Church of England, the Separatists left England to escape religious persecution. Living in poverty in Holland, however, they were distressed that their children were growing up without English traditions. The Separatists looked for a place where they could live and worship in freedom; the New World seemed to meet their needs. Quick to see the financial gain in this endeavor, the Virginia Company of London agreed to send 35 Separatists to Virginia along with other settlers known as Strangers. Collectively, the group of Separatists and Strangers were called Pilgrims. In exchange for passage, the Pilgrims agreed to repay their expenses over the next seven years with half of the profits they earned from trapping furs and raising crops.

TEACHING TIPS

The Virginia Company of London advertised for people to travel with the Separatists to the New World. Bring samples of travel brochures to class. Have students create travel brochures to attract people to the established Plymouth Plantation. Ask them to include at least five facts about Plymouth and illustrations.
